World Maritime Day 2019: Know All About Theme & Significance of The Day on Its 71st Anniversary

World Maritime Day is celebrated every year on September 26 to create awareness about the contribution of the international maritime industry towards world’s economy, especially in shipping. The also gives an opportunity to look forward towards future challenges faced by maritime transport.

World Maritime Day is celebrated every year on September 26 to create awareness about the contribution of the international maritime industry towards world’s economy, especially in shipping. The also gives an opportunity to look forward towards future challenges faced by maritime transport. This year, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) will celebrate the 71st annual World Maritime Day. National Maritime Day of India 2019: The Significance and History of the Day Dedicated to India’s Nautical Legacy.

The IMO was formed 71 years ago. Until, 1982, it was known as the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO). It is a specialised agency of the United Nations responsible for regulating shipping. The IMO was established following agreement at a UN conference held in Geneva in 1948. However, the first meeting of the organisation was held in 1959.

Theme of World Maritime Day 2019:

This year, the theme of the World Maritime Day is “Empowering Women in the maritime community”. The theme provides an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of gender equality, which is in line with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). According to the UN, it will highlight contribution of women within the maritime sector. India Ready to Work with Maldives on Strengthening Maritime Security: President.

“It also allows stakeholders the opportunity to work towards achieving the SDGs, particularly SDG 5, to foster an environment in which women are identified and selected for career development opportunities in maritime administrations, ports and maritime training institutes and to encourage more conversation for gender equality in the maritime space,” said the UN. Navy Chief Inaugurates 2nd Edition of Goa Maritime Symposium.

Last year’s theme was "IMO 70: Our Heritage – Better Shipping for a Better Future." On the World Maritime Day, multiple events were held in parallel with the main celebration at IMO's London headquarters.
