World Environment Day 2019: History & Significance

World Environment Day was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 on the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. It was after two years, in 1974, the first WED was observed with the theme, “Only One Earth.” With the observation of World Environment Day, the UN aware the protection and improvement of the human environment, which is a serious concern among environmentalists across. The day provides us with an opportunity to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by individuals, enterprises and communities in preserving and enhancing nature.

World Environment Day 2019 Theme 

Although, the WED celebration has been held annually since 1987, the idea for rotating the centre of these activities through selecting different host countries began. Every year, the UN comes up with a theme and host country to promote the current environmental concern and how people can contribute to preserving nature. This year, the theme for World Environment Day is “Beat Air Pollution,” and the host nation is China. WED 2019 topic invites people to consider how we can change our everyday lives to reduce the amount of air pollution we produce and thwart its contribution to global warming and its numerous effects on our health.

Ever since its inception, World Environment Day has grown into a global platform for raising awareness and taking significant action and it is today celebrated in more than 100 countries.
