World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 every year encouraging people to protect the environment. The day observed by the United Nations tries to spread worldwide awareness on the protection of our environment. This year India is the global host of World Environment Day where governments, communities, industries and individuals will come together promoting the urgent need for environmental protection.
People also took to Twitter raising awareness of the day. This year the theme for World Environment Day is 'Beat Plastic Pollution' which is a major threat to marine and human health. The day which began in 1974 is widely celebrated in over 100 countries.
Spreading awareness on World Environment Day, sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has created a sand art of turtle with the installation of plastic bottles at Puri beach in Odisha. The artwork speaks volumes of how the single-use plastic we throw into the ocean affect the marine life. There have been innumerable cases of turtles died after getting entangled in plastics. Many-a-times turtles also end up swallowing these plastic bits confusing it to be food. The art showcases the problem which results in the death of hundreds of turtles every year.
Actors, politicians, sportspeople, environmentalist from around the world took to various social networking sites urging the need to create permanent solutions to the plastic waste generated annually. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cricketer Rohit Sharma, actor Dia Mirza, politician B.S. Yeddyurappa, UN General António Guterres were among the first few to tweet about the need for a healthy environment.

Our world is swamped by harmful plastic waste. By 2050, there could be more plastic in the ocean than fish. On World Environment Day, let’s all do our part to #BeatPlasticPollution. pic.twitter.com/YZOlJZIA1H

The result of the uncontrollable use of plastic:
Don’t cry over the past, it’s gone.
Don’t stress about the future, it hasn’t arrived.
Live in the present and make it beautiful!
This #WorldEnvironmentDay, let us all make the change.
Stop littering and say goodbye to single-use plastic!
Together we can #BeatPlasticPollution! pic.twitter.com/SJ6XcJDD5v

Let’s not make ‘looking after our environment’ an event which comes few times a year. Let’s make it a part of our daily routine. Something we pass on to the next generation #ThereIsNoPlanetB #WorldEnvironmentDay
