World Drug Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1987. June 26 was marked by resolution 42/112 to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve an international society free of drug abuse. This day was chosen to celebrate Lin Zexu's efforts to restrict the opium trade in Guangdong, China, a significant event in the history of drug control. Besides, the UN General Assembly chose the day particularly as it coincides with the signing of the Convention on Psychotropic Substances in 1971. This convention's goal was to control the manufacturing, import, export, distribution, and use of certain psychoactive substances by countries.
