World Breastfeeding Week History
World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every year from August 1 to August 7 in commemoration of the 1990 Innocenti Declaration. World Breastfeeding Week was first celebrated in 1992 by WABA and is now observed in over 120 countries by UNICEF, WHO and their partners, including individuals, organisations, and governments. WABA itself was formed on February 14, 1991, with the goal to re-establish a global breastfeeding culture and provide support for breastfeeding everywhere. Since 2016, WBW has been aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2018, a World Health Assembly resolution endorsed WBW as an important breastfeeding promotion strategy.
