Anaesthesia plays a very important role in the field of medicine. And to mark the very first demonstration of ether anaesthesia, World Anesthesia Day is marked on October 16. On this day in the year 1846, the first successful demonstration took place in the Massachusetts General Hospital, home of the Harvard School of Medicine. To respect the importance of this event in medical history, the annual celebration is marked and it represents anaesthesiologists from different countries.

Anaesthesia is a state of controlled, temporary loss of sensation or awareness that is induced for medical purposes. It puts a patient into temporary unconsciousness under the effects of anaesthetic drugs. This day is marked by The World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) which represents over 134 societies of anaesthesiologists. Over 150 countries take part in this. They promote and focus on the availability, safety and quality of anaesthesiology. It also talks about anaesthesiology and surgery as an essential element of global health - to address the crises of unsafe surgery and access to surgical care. California Mom Claims Doctors Performed C-Section Without Anaesthesia & Offered 25 Dollar Gift Card as an Apology.

The WFSA works to showcase the role of anaesthesiologists in resuscitation during this event. For this year's World Anesthesia Day 2019 campaign, the WFSA will be joining with the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR), the European Resuscitation Council and their World Restart a Heart Day campaign, to raise awareness about the crucial role of anaesthetists.
