Maharashtra Din History & Significance
During British rule in India, the western coast, including present-day Gujarat and parts of Pakistan, was under British control as part of the Bombay Presidency. After India gained independence in 1947, the Bombay Presidency stayed with India, while Sind province became part of Pakistan. In 1950, after India became a republic, they formed Bombay State. Bombay State was linguistically diverse and included places where people spoke Marathi, Gujarati, Kutchi, and Konkani.
The Sanyukta Maharashtra Samiti was at the forefront of the movement to divide the Bombay State into two states, one where people spoke Gujarati and Kutchi, and the other where people spoke Marathi and Konkani. As a result of this movement, on April 25, 1960, the Parliament of India enacted the Bombay Reorganisation Act, 1960, and two new states, Maharashtra and Gujarat, were formed. The act came into effect on May 1, 1960, which marks the day of the annual celebration.
Maharashtra Day is a significant occasion for the Marathi-speaking population in the state, as it marks the formation of the state. On this day, liquor sales are prohibited, and various events are held across the state to celebrate Maharashtra's history and traditions.
