- Sit in a quiet, clean place and make a Sankalp (pledge) to observe the fast for the well-being and longevity of your husband.
- Place a picture or idol of Goddess Parvati for the puja and arrange all the necessary items for the puja.
- Now start the puja rituals and keep a fast for the whole day without consuming food or water.
- Offer water, flowers, and rice to the Goddess Parvati's idol or picture and apply kumkum on the idol and offer sweets.
- In the evening, gather the other fasting women and listen to the Karwa Chauth Katha, which narrates the story of Queen Veeravati and her devotion to her husband.
- When it is time for the moonrise, get ready for the moon sighting by arranging a thali (plate) with a diya, a karwa (pitcher), some sweets, and chawal (rice).
- When the moon rises, take the thali in your hands and see the moon through a sieve, offer arghya (water) to the moon and seek the blessings of the moon for your husband's long life.
- After seeing the moon, see your husband's face through the sieve. Now, your husband will offer you water and some food to break your fast.
- Take a sip of water and then eat something sweet. This marks the end of your fast.
