Gauri is a form of Goddess Parvati, mother of Lord Ganesha. In Maharashtra, it is believed that Gauri is Ganesha’s sister who comes to visit him during the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. The idol of Goddess Gauri is brought home prior to the Ganesh Chaturthi festival as it falls on the day before Ganeshotsav. The idol is immersed on the third day.

 

Gowri Ganesha Puja Vidhi and Rituals

  • Devotees wake up early in the morning, take a bath and wear clean clothes.
  • The puja room is cleaned and decorated with rangoli, flowers, and banana leaves.
  • Place a small wooden stool (chowki) and place an idol or picture of Goddess Parvati on the decorated chowki.
  • Now prepare a puja thali with essential items such as turmeric, kumkum (vermillion), sandalwood paste, flowers, betel leaves, betel nuts, coconut, fruits, and sweets
  • Light the oil lamp and incense sticks and invoke Goddess Gowri by chanting mantras like ‘Om Shri Gowri Devi Namah’ or ‘Om Parvatyai Namah’.
  • Offer flowers, fruits, betel leaves, and betel nuts to the Goddess and perform the aarti by lighting the aarti lamp. Recite prayers dedicated to Goddess Parvati.
  • After the puja, women typically observe fasting for the day, breaking it after the evening rituals.

Goddess Gowri, considered a symbol of purity, fertility, and marital bliss, is worshipped primarily by women. Married women pray for the well-being of their husbands, and young girls seek blessings for a good husband.
