Bonalu 2024 will begin on July 7, the first Sunday in the month of Ashadham. The festival will end on July 28. Various important rituals and poojas are performed on the first and last day of Bonalu.
Significance of Bonalu Festival
Bonalu is a celebration of Goddess Mahakali - the fierce Hindu goddess of destruction and doomsday. The word "Bonnam" - in "Bonalu" - literally translates to "Bhojanam" or "meal. On the occasion of Bonalu, devotees prepare a special delicacy made of rice, jaggery and milk in a new brass or earthen pot adorned with neem leaves, turmeric, vermilion and a lit lamp on top of the pot. This offering is then made to Goddess Mahakali. The preparation is traditionally made by women, who carry the pots on their heads and make an offering of the Bonam along with turmeric vermilion, bangles and sari to the Mother Goddess across the temples.
