Mumbai, September 11: Today marks the 124th birth anniversary of Acharya Vinoba Bhave, the social reformer and the great Gandhian. Born on September 11, 1895 in Gagode, Bombay (now Mumbai), Vinobha Bhave is best known for his land reform movement called the Bhoodan Yajna or Bhoodan movement (Land-Gift Movement). Bhave decided at an early age that he wanted to dedicate his life to the cause of India's freedom and social reform.

With this intention, he joined Mahatma Gandhi's ashram in Sabarmati, Ahmedabad and abandoned his high school studies. Bhave was deeply moved by the way people lived in India's rural areas and villages. He decided to live a life of austerity.

Bhave was also jailed several times for leading protest against British rule. The title of acharya (teacher) was given to him by the people. Bhave’s biggest contribution came in the form of Bhoodan movement. He walked from village to village, and appealed the wealthy landlords to donate land to the poor and landless. Bhave believed that the way to intoduce and encourage land reform should be change in attitude and innate, opposed to enforced by the government. Vinoba Bhave also has the distinction of being the first recepient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award from India. He died on November 15, 1982 in Panwar, Maharashtra.
