Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, also known as Veer Savarkar, is a polarising figure in India history. Although a fierce nationalist, Savarkar was believed to have played a role in Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination. The freedom fighter was born on May 28, 1883, and was a lawyer by profession. People know him as a Hindutvavadi, but Savarkar looked at Hindu philosophy through the eyes of pragmatism and worked towards reforming Hinduism. His revolutionary activities against the British government brought him a lot of jail time. Savarkar made the best use of the time by improving upon his idea of Hindutva and Hinduism. Today, he is worshipped by some who are touched by Savarkar’s brand of fiery nationalism and decried by many for his alleged hand in Mahatma Gandhi’s murder. He was also believed to have proposed the two-nation theory, which believed in the separation of a Hindu India and an Islamic Pakistan. But even his detractors will agree that Savarkar did have some beautiful thoughts on religious harmony. On Savarkar Jayanti, let’s look at some of Veer Savarkar’s best quotes. Today is the 136th birth anniversary of Savarkar. He has had a chequered reputation in Indian nationalistic history. Whether or not he really deserved the honorific title of “Veer” (brave) is still debated among historians and secularists. But the cult of Savarkar grows to this day, bringing in more nationalists to the fold who are fans of his revolutionary zeal.
