Vamana is believed to be the first human avatar of Lord Vishnu and is believed to have been born in Treta Yuga to Goddess Aditi and Rishi Kashyapa on the Dwadashi Tithi of Bhadrapada Shukla Paksha during Abhijit Muhurat when the Shravana Nakshatra was prevailing. The observance of Vamana Jayanti focuses on how Lord Vishnu came on earth to test King Bali’s devotion to Lord Vishnu and asked him for 3 steps of land. When King Bali accepted this task, Lord Vishnu took His first step as Vamana, which measured the whole earth, on his second stride, he measured heaven. Having understood that the dwarf monk before him was actually Lord Vishnu, King Bali offered his head for Lord Vishnu to take his third step. To honour the benevolence of His devotee, instead of killing Bali, Lord Vishnu pushed him to the Patala Loka or netherworld and granted him a boon - allowing him to visit his subjects on Earth once a year. This return of King Bali to earth is marked as Onam in Kerala.
