Valentine’s Day 2019: Love in the Time of Politics, Romantic 'Aww' Inspiring Moments of Politicians and Their Better Halves
There are some politicians who are involved in love affairs or having cute love stories.
February is known as the month of love. Two important festivals fall during this time of the year. The one is Chinese New Year celebrated every year on February 5, which marks the arrival of spring. While the other is Valentine’s Day, also known Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine. This festival is quite popular among the youth. As Valentine’s Day is a festival of love, it is hard to associate it with Indian politicians, because we have always seen them bickering inside and outside Parliament. Politics is considered such a heartless profession that it's difficult to imagine politicians having tender human emotions of love. But despite that, some politicians had very "aww"-inspiring love stories. Here are some instances of romance and love in Indian politics.
Sushma Swaraj – Kaushal Swaraj
Sushma Swaraj was married on July 13, 1975, to a fellow advocate Swaraj Kaushal at the Supreme Court. Kaushal is now a senior advocate of the top court. Since their marriage, their love story is going stronger day by day. The couple has a daughter, Bansuri.
Recently, when Swaraj was trolled on Twitter, her husband came to her rescue. In a bid to shame the troll, identified as Mukesh Gupta (@MG_IITDelhi), Kaushal shared the screenshot of the message he received on social media. "Your words have given us unbearable pain… Please do not use such words for her," he said.
Smriti Irani – Zubin Irani
When Smriti was struggling to establish herself in the television industry, she met Zubin Irani. After Smiriti became popular because of her roles in TV shows like Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Ramayan, both decided to take friendship forward. In 2001, the couple tied the knot. The couple had their first baby in 2001 whom they named Zohr, and by the end of 2003, both welcomed their second child, baby child, Zoish.
Smriti Irani's Instagram handle is full of romantic and lovely pictures with Zubin. The couple looks amazing together. Recently, Smriti shares a cute picture with a caption, "he #10yearchallenge ; find someone who can make your smile reflect in your eyes the way @iamzfi does in mine."
Dinesh Gundu Rao – Tabasum
Dinesh is married to Tabassum. This was a love marriage, however, their families did not support their marriage. Rao belongs to an orthodox Hindu Brahmin family while Tabassum parents are fundamentalist Muslims. The couple has two children.
When Union Minister Anant Kumar Hegde attack Gundu Rao over religion of his wife. He took no time to Hit back at the minister. He tweeted, "Sad to see @AnantkumarH stoop to such low levels as to bring in personal issues.
Guess it’s his lack of culture. Guess he hasn’t learnt from our Hindu scriptures.
Time hasn’t run out, he can still try and become a more dignified human."
Sonia – Rajiv Gandhi
The love story of Rajiv and Sonia became a political affair. Rajiv Gandhi saw Sonia in a Greek restaurant in Cambridge and fell for her instantly. After that, both began to meet frequently and finally got married to each other. Rajiv and Sonia had two children Rahul and Priyanka. But in 1991, Rajiv Gandhi, the then former Prime Minister died in a bomb blast in Tamil Nadu.
That day, when Rajiv first saw Sonia in the restaurant, he was so mesmerised by her beauty that he immediately wrote a poem about her and sent it along with a bottle of the best wine to her through restaurant's owner Charles Antoni.
Apart from the above-mentioned couples, Punjab Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu and his wife has also given people major couple goals. The two were often seen shielding each other from opposition’s attack. Similarly, when Businessman Robert Vadra was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate for questioning, his wife and Congress general Secretary Priyanka Gandhi stood by him.
Valentine week begins with a Rose Day followed by Propose Day, Chocolate Day, Teddy Day, Promise Day, Hug Day, Kiss Day and finally Valentine’s Day. It is a special day dedicated to love. The air of love is felt in the air right from the start of the month. The entire 7 days is a build-up of expressing your love day by day.
