Thrissur Pooram, Kerala's largest temple festival begins today. It falls on the Pooram star during the month of Medam as per the Malayalam calendar. According to the Gregorian calendar, Thrissur Pooram 2019 begins on May 13 and will extend to May 14. Thousands of people from across countries attend the festivities in Vadakkunnathan Temple. Some of the popular events that attract a large number of crowds include two rounds of fireworks, kudamattam, a parade of caparisoned elephants, Panchavadyam (an orchestra of five instruments) among other cultural and traditional events. Thrissur Pooram is known for being the largest temple festival in Kerala and is called the mother of all poorams. The opening of the Thrissur Pooram festival was marked by the arrival of 54-year-old elephant Thechikottukavu Ramachandran on Sunday morning. More than 10,000 people had gathered in the temple premises to catch a glimpse of the tusker which was earlier banned from being paraded in the event. Thrissur Pooram was introduced by Raja Rama Varma, known as Sakthan Thampuran, the 17th-century ruler of the Kingdom of Cochin in Kerala. Over centuries, Thrissur Pooram grew in size and stature and is known internationally. Around 50 elephants are paraded at the event as an array of percussionists stage the popular temple artform Panchavadyam. Music lovers who crowd the artists catch the rhythm of the constantly increasing tempo alongside a proportional decrease in the number of beats in cycles. The display of firecrackers will be held on Monday afternoon which will continue till the wee hours on Tuesday.
