Indians will celebrate Teachers' Day on September 5. It is a day to honour our teachers who have guided us throughout, be it in education or extra-curricular activities. A teacher plays an instrumental role in shaping students from their childhood. It is one of the undermined professions and every year on this day, schools and colleges arrange programmes to dedicate this day to the academic professors. Teachers' day is celebrated every year on September 5 in the memory of one of the best teachers, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan who was also our second president.

Radhakrishnan is known for his humble and excellent teaching skills that made him his students' favourite. He is somebody who always held that "teachers should be the best minds in the country". The first Teachers’ Day was celebrated in the country in 1962 when Radhakrishnan began serving as the second President of India. When his students suggested that his birthday be celebrated as 'Radhakrishnan Day' he politely refused and said that "Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5 is observed as Teachers' Day." Teachers' Day Dates Around The World: When Does India and Other Countries Celebrate This Day.

Radhakrishnan was born in 1882 in the town of Tirutani in Andhra Pradesh. His father wanted him to be a priest, but he eventually joined Christian College, Madras to study philosophy. After completing MA in Philosophy in 1908, Radhakrishnan taught the subject at Madras Presidency College. From 1931 to 1936 he held the post of the Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University. He was also the Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University. Radhakrishnan was recognised by Oxford University when he was called to fill the Chair of Spalding Professor of Eastern Religions. In 1939, he was elected Fellow of the British Academy.

Talking about Radhakrishnan, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru once said, "He has served his country in many capacities. But above all, he is a great teacher from whom all of us have learnt much and will continue to learn. It is India’s peculiar privilege to have a great philosopher, a great educationist and a great humanist as her President." Radhakrishnan prefered to be a teacher all his life despite the achievements and honorary positions he held. We wish all teachers a very Happy Teachers' Day!

Teachers' Day celebrations

Educational institutions witness a lot of celebrations in schools with senior students essaying the role of teachers for a day. It is to put them in the teachers' shoe to understand the responsibility of their work. The role reversal also helps teachers take a break for a day. Young children also dress up as Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan remembering the teacher. Students bring flowers, cards and sweets for their teacher showing gratitude and love. Cultural programs showcasing the traditions and customs of the country are also held.
