Snana Yatra 2024 Date

Snana Yatra 2024 date falls on June 22, 2024 a Saturday.

Snana Yatra History

This day is believed to be the birthday of Lord Jagannath. According to the Skanda Purana, when Raja Indradyumna installed the wooden deities, he started this bathing ceremony. Since then, the day is celebrated with the ritual bathing of the deities. Legends say that after the Snana Yatra, the gods fell ill and spent 15 days in isolation. Hence, after the Snana Yatra the idols are brought out for worship only on Jagannath Rath Yatra Day, once they have recovered. While Puri attracts thousands of visitors on this day, the festival is also celebrated in other parts of Odisha. Early in the morning, the idols of Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Balabhadra are taken from the Ratnasimhasan of the Jagannath Puri Temple to the snana bedi, or the bathing altar.

Snana Yatra Rituals

On the day of Snana Yatra, the idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra are bathed with 108 pots of purified water taken from the northern well of the Jagannath temple. This ceremony is accompanied by religious chants. In the evening, after the bathing ritual, Jagannath and Balabhadra are dressed with elephant headgear, representing the God Ganesh. This is called 'Gajavesha'.

Snana Yatra Significance

On this day, devotees bathe early in the morning, chant Vedic mantras, and offer prayers to Lord Jagannath. It is believed that seeing the deity on this day cleanses devotees of all sins. Hundreds of thousands of devotees visit the Jagannath temple in Puri, Odisha for this special occasion. Snana Yatra Images & Debasnana Purnima Wishes: Share HD Wallpapers of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra Darshan With Family & Friends.
