Dnyaneshwar also known as Jnaneshwar, Jnanadeva, Dnyandev or Mauli was a 13th century Marathi saint and philosopher. He lived just a short span of 21 years and authored Dnyaneshwari, a commentary on the Bhagavad Gita and Amrutanubhav.

He lived just a short span of 21 years and authored Dnyaneshwari, a commentary on the Bhagavad Gita and Amrutanubhav. Dnyaneshwar was born during Krishna Paksha of the Hindu month, Bhadrapad in 1275. He belonged to a Maharashtrian Brahmin family who lived in Apegaon village on the bank of Godavari during the reign of the Yadava king Ramadevarava. Dnyaneshwar's birth is marked as Dnyaneshwari Jayanti. Shri Dnyaneshwari Jayanti will be observed on September 20, 2019. On the occasion of Shri Dnyaneshwari Jayanti 2019, talks and discussions about his rich literature, writings and heritage are held.
Sant Dnyaneshwar is among the first to use Marathi to make the message of Bhagavad Gita popular. Sri Dnyaneshwari Jayanti is annually held during the month of Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha Sashti Tithi or the sixth day of the waning phase of moon in Maharashtra.
Dnyaneshwar's writing which was known as Dnyaneshwari continues to be read and discussed widely among Maharashtrians even today. It is also translated into various languages. In his work, he is said to have waged a silent war against the caste system which was a part of the teachings of Sanatan Dharma. He questioned religious dominance and orthodox customs practised by the priestly class.
After writing Amritanubhava, Dnyaneshwar went to on a pilgrimage with other saints. After paying visits to various holy places, Dnyaneshwar felt that the mission of his life was over. He, hence decided to take live Samadhi. Dnyaneshwar entered into the yogic path of salvation called into Sanjeevan Samadhi, at the age of 21 at Alandi on the banks of River Indrayani. Following which his siblings also followed his footsteps and within a year they too reached the ends of their lives.
