Shitala Satam Significance

Shitala Satam is observed in honour of Goddess Shitala, known to be an incarnation of Goddess Durga. Shitala Devi is worshipped as a form of Shakti in Hinduism and is said to be a natural healer. The Goddess is worshipped to receive protection against smallpox or similar diseases. According to religious beliefs, the benefits of worshipping Mata Sheetala have been explained in the Skanda Puranam, which consists of the Shitala Mata Strotra, also known as ‘Sheetalaashtak’ written by Lord Shiva.

The most important ritual that needs to be followed on the day of Shitala Satam is that no fresh food is cooked in the house. The food which is consumed on the day of Shitala Satam should be cold and stale. Hence, most Gujarati families prepare special food on the previous day, which is popularly known as ‘Randhan Chhath’.
