Shahu Maharaj was the ruler of Kolhapur for 28 years, that is, from 1894 to 1922. During that period of time, the king practiced several social reforms. He implemented free education, thus minimising the barriers restricting the farmers, the backward classes and the oppressed from being a part of society.
