The entire month of Sawan is significant for the devotees of Lord Shiva. In all Mondays or (Somvars), Shiv bhakts observe day-long fasts, which is known as Sawan Somwar Vrat. Some devotees observe sixteen Mondays fasting known as Solah Somwar Vrat, from the first Monday of the holy month.

According to Drik Panchang, there is a fifteen-day difference in the starting time of Shravan month in Northern and Southern India, depending on the lunar calendar. North Indian states follow the Purnimant calendar where Shravan begins fifteen days earlier than Amavasyant calendar, which is followed by the South Indian regions. Sawan 2019 Puja Vidhi
Monday’s fast is dedicated to Shiva, and Tuesday’s fast (Gauri Vrat) is for Mata Parvati. During the month of Sawan, devotees get up early and clean the place of worship. Common items required for Sawan Somvar puja vidhi includes panchamrit, coconut and bilva patra leaves. Devotees chant Om Namah Shivaya and meditate to attain peace while worshipping Lord Shiva.
The whole month of Sawan is considered auspicious to seek the blessing of Lord Shiva. It is believed that everything you aspire to gain can be achieved if you keep a fast or vrat during the holy month.
