Savitribai Phule's Life

Born on January 3, 1831, Savitribai Phule was known as the 'Crusaders of gender justice'. Phule was born in Naigaon village in the Satara District of Maharashtra. She was the youngest daughter of Lakshmi and Khandoji Nevase Patil, who belonged to the Mali Community. Savitribai was married to Jyotirao Phule at a very young age. At the ages of 21 and 17, both Jyotiba and Savitri opened schools for women in 1848. It was the first initiative by Indians to open schools for women's education.

She also led a campaign against child marriage and also supported widow remarriage. According to historical records, Jyotiba and Savitri left their home in 1849 and began their work toward women's education, which was considered against society by their family members. Along with her husband, Savitribai taught children from different castes and opened a total of 18 schools. The couple also opened a care centre, Balhatya Pratibandhak Griha, for pregnant rape victims and helped deliver and save their children.
