After years of struggle and guidance under the principles of Mahatma Gandhi, India achieved freedom from the British Raj on August 15, 1947. Despite having received independence, the nation did not have a permanent constitution. Its laws were based on the modified colonial Government of India Act 1935. It was on August 28 of the independence year; the Drafting Committee was appointed to draft a permanent constitution with Dr B.R. Ambedkar as chairman. A draft constitution was prepared by the committee and submitted to the Constituent Assembly on November 4, 1947. After many debates and some modifications, the 308 members of the Assembly signed two hand-written copies (one each in Hindi and English) of the document on January 24, 1950. Two days later; January 26, the constitution of India came into effect. Republic Day 2019 Speeches in English: Watch Videos of Patriotic Addresses for Students to Present in School & Celebrate 26th January.
