New Delhi, October 19: Ramlila is common street play in India depicting the life of Lord Ram, the righteous king and avatar of the god Vishnu, who defeated Ravana, the king of Lanka. Ramlila is staged to celebrate the victory of good (Rama) over evil (Ravana) during the nine days of Navratri. The celebrations culminate on Dussehra (Dasara or Vijayadashami) when giant effigies of Ravana are set on fire. On the occassion of Dussehra, effigies of Ravana are burnt which symbolises the victory of good over evil. Ramlila plays re-enact important events of Rama's life which include his marriage with Sita, the period in exile and his victory over Ravana. In Delhi, Ramlila performances and Ravan Dahan at Ramlila Maidan are extremely popular. Thousands of people gather on the evening of Dussehra to witness Ravan Dahan at Ramlila Maidan. Ramlila plays are also held at Madhavas Park, 15 August Park, Lal Qila Maidan and Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra theatre lawns beside other small grounds in the national capital.
Ramlila series performed at Ramnagar in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi is also extremely popular among devotees. The Ramnagar Ramlila is organised over 31 days where the entire Ramacharitmanas is recited. It is known for its lavish sets, dialogues and visual spectacle. Ramlila plays in today's time assume political significance as well. The event of Ravan Dahan is being used by politicians to target their opponents. Politicians actively participate in the celebrations to woo the majority vote bank.
