Randhan Chhath is a traditional Hindu festival celebrated mainly in the western Indian state of Gujarat. It is an important day in the Gujarati Calendar, marked by family gatherings where various traditional Gujarati dishes are prepared. Randhan Chhath, also known as Randhan Chhath Puja, is marked one day before Shitala Satam in the calendar. Randhan Chhath is observed on the sixth day of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in Shravan month. The day is meant for preparing food (randhan) for the next day, which is Shitala Satam. Hence, Randhan Chhath is marked one day before, i.e., on Chhath day. According to Drikpanchang, Randhan Chhath 2023 will be celebrated on Monday, September 4. Randhan Chhath Significance
Randhan Chhath is a unique ritual observed in Gujarat during the Shravan month. The day is dedicated to preparing food for Goddess Shitala. It must be noted that Randhan Chhath is not an independent festival but part of Shitala Satam, a religious festival dedicated to Goddess Shitala Devi. As all sorts of cooking are prohibited on the day of Shitala Satam, most Gujarati families make food arrangements for the next day on Randhan Chhath. Being the important day for cooking, the day has its name Randhan Chhath, i.e., cooking on the sixth day. Delicacies like laddoos, thepla, sweet dhebra, paratha, bajra rotla, sabudana khichadi, , vada, teeka dhebra, sheera and puri, among other dishes, are prepared on this day. In Gujarat, Randhan Chhath is observed at two different times. In some parts of Gujarat closer to Maharashtra, the festival is celebrated on Shravan Shukla Paksha (Shravan Sud 6 - bright/waxing phase of moon), while in some regions like Saurashtra, Shravan Krishna Paksha (Shravan Vad 6 - dark/waning phase of moon) is preferred.
