New Delhi, May 16: Muslims across India will await the announcement from Delhi Jama Masjid and the respective Hilal Committees in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Patna and other regions of India to know whether the holy month of Ramadan ul-kareem, also referred as Ramzan in the Subcontinent, has begun. If the crescent moon is sighted today, believing Muslims will begin the fasting from tomorrow. Stay tuned here for the live news and updates related to the Ramzan moon.

Since India has a vast geographical territory, moon sighting in one part of the nation does not generally imply that it has been seen in other regions as well. For example, the coastal state of Kerala has, over the years, sighted the crescent moon of Ramzan and Eid-ul-Fitr a day before the rest of the nation.

According to Islamic scholars, the possibility of moon being sighted in the subcontinent is unlikely, as the crescent could not be spotted in Saudi Arabia and other Middle East nations on Tuesday.

Since the lunar calendar in Middle East is running a day ahead of the eastern part of the world, the region witnesses the crescent moon of Ramadan and Eid-al-Fitr a day before the Indian subcontinent and other parts of South and South-East Asia.

"Yesterday, the moon could not be spotted in the Middle East. This means they will begin Ramzan from Thursday by default. The pattern over the past several decades shows that  crescent moon in the Indian subcontinent is always spotted a day after the Middle East. This means Ramzan would most probably begin in India from Friday," said Maulana Sarfaraz Khan, a Nagpur unit member of Dawat-e-Islami, while speaking to this reporter.
