The Hilal committees could not spot the crescent moon in Delhi and Northern India on Sunday, May 5. Hence, Ramzan will begin in India's capital and the surrounding states all over Northern India only from Tuesday, May 7.

Ramazan or Ramzan or Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting (sawm) to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad according to Islamic belief. This annual observance is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam. The month lasts 29–30 days based on the visual sightings of the crescent moon, according to numerous biographical accounts compiled in the hadiths.

New Delhi, May 5: Muslims across the world and in India are praying to spot and will attempt to sight the crescent moon today, May 5. If the moon is spotted, the holy month of Ramzan or Ramadan will commence and the first roza or fast would be observed from tomorrow. Muslims in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttarakhand will be on the lookout for the crescent moon from Sunday evening. The Hilal committees across the globe as well as in India will be on the lookout for the crescent moon and will accept testimonies from citizens if they report on any moon sighting. If the crescent moon is spotted today, on Sunday in India, the fast will commence from tomorrow, Monday.

However, if the crescent moon is sighted in India on Monday evening or night, the fasting will begin in the country on Tuesday.

The Holy Ramadan or Ramzan would begin as and when the Hilal committees testifies or the citizens and individuals confirm that they have spotted the moon. Muslims all over the world are duty bound to abstain from food and water between dawn to dusk throughout the next 29 or 30 days.
