Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi, the festival that celebrates the relation and bond between brother and sister will be celebrated on August 26 this year. On this day, sisters tie a rakhi on the wrist of their brothers, who in return promise to protect them. Colourful threads or Rakhi flood markets a week ahead of the festival. According to the Hindu calendar, Raksha Bandhan falls on the full moon of Savan month, here is the auspicious time and shubh muhurat to tie Rakhi. Brothers give presents to their sisters for tying the rakhi while sisters prepare the best dishes or feed them, including sweets.
Raksha Bandhan which literally translates to the 'bond of protection' is celebrated to strengthen the relationship between siblings. While most women prefer buying rakhis from stalls, some also make it at home. In the modern days, YouTube DIY videos explaining how to make rakhis are quite a hit. Preparations for Raksha Bandhan begins days before the festival.
While the festival is between brother and sister, every member of the family wakes up early in the morning and indulges int he preparations. The rakhi is tied after a small pooja following the religious customs. Siblings send Raksha Bandhan messages to each other on the day. And as the festival approaches, we have compiled a list of messages that brothers can send to their sisters. There are different legends and folklores explaining from where the celebration emerged. Delicious food is an integral part of the festival and in the recent times, chocolates have partly replaced it. Many traditionally prefer to prepare it at home. Meanwhile, Indian Railways Catering & Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC) has come up with the special package for those looking to celebrate the festival with their family. You will be taken to places of major tourist attractions including those associated with the great epic Ramayana.
