The occasion marks the last day of the Paryushan festival of Jain community. The festival falls every year in the Jain calendar month of Bhadrapada. The festivity each year, coincides with the Ganeshotsav. Samvatsari rituals involve people personally greeting their friends and relatives, Michhami Dukkadam, which means “may all the evil that has been done be fruitless.” Jains observe a complete fast on the day.
