Pingali Venkayya, born 143 years ago, on this day (July 2, 1876), was an Indian freedom fighter who the country remembers proudly, not just for his contributions and struggle for independence, but for many other reasons. It was finally in 1921, when Venkayya’s design was finally approved by Mahatma Gandhi in a Congress meeting held in Vijayawada in 1921. Venkayya was born in Bhatlapenumarru, situated near Machilipatnam, what is today known as Andhra Pradesh. His version of the country’s flag was first designed for the Indian National Congress and subsequently modified in 1947 with the Ashok Chakra replacing the spinning wheel.
