Pingali Venkayya’s 143rd Birth Anniversary: Twitterati Remembers the Man Who Designed Indian National Flag

It is yet another significant day for India, when one of the most important historical figures was born. Pingali Venkayya, born 143 years ago, on this day (July 2, 1876), was an Indian freedom fighter who the country remembers proudly, not just for his contributions and struggle for independence, but for many other reasons. One of his great work was his design on which the current Indian national flag is based. It was this genius mind who created this soul-stirring tiranga. The nation is celebrating Venkayya’s 143rd birth anniversary today. During the struggle for Independence, Venkayya relentlessly put forward the idea of having a flag of our own and he presented his thoughts in all the Congress sessions held between 1918 and 1921. It was finally in 1921, when Venkayya’s design was finally approved by Mahatma Gandhi in a Congress meeting held in Vijayawada in 1921. The flag had saffron, white and green stripes with the spinning wheel placed in the centre. Venkayya was born in Bhatlapenumarru, situated near Machilipatnam, what is today known as Andhra Pradesh. His version of the country’s flag was first designed for the Indian National Congress and subsequently modified in 1947 with the Ashok Chakra replacing the spinning wheel.
