Phulpati Significance

Phulpati holds great significance in Nepal as it symbolizes the victory of Lord Ram over the demon king Ravana, a central theme in the epic Ramayana. On this day, the royal kalash is filled with holy water, banana stalks, jamara (sacred barley shoots), and different kinds of flowers are carried in a formal procession from the Gorkha Durbar (Gorkha Palace) to the Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square in Kathmandu. Once the Kalash reaches the Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square, it is placed on display for public viewing. This marks the formal beginning of the Dashain festival. The phulpati is then taken to the Nasal Chowk of the Hanuman Dhoka Durbar for an official ritual.
