Krishna Janmashtami 2019 will be observed on August 23-24. The birth of Lord Krishna is celebrated with great fervour and enthusiasm all across the country. People worship the Hindu God, who is believed to be the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Krishna or Balgopal is worshipped with traditional customs and a spread of prasad items are prepared to place before him as offerings. At some temples, a Chappan bhog is prepared and offered to the Lord. One of the commonly-prepared dishes is a Punjabi traditional recipe of Panjiri. Panjiri, also spelt as Panjeri is essentially a North Indian sweet. It is a staple dish from Punjab made from whole-wheat flour, sugar, ghee and dry fruits. A rich source of nutrients, it is usually prepared in the winters to ward off the cold. It is no less than a superfood and also makes for an element in Janmashtami prasad. Among the other prasad items, there is Makhan Mishri, another sweet made with white butter.
How to Make Panjiri For Janmashtami
Ingredients:
- Badam (almonds) 200 gms
- Makhane (lotus seeds) 80 gms
- Gond (edible gum) 100 gms
- Nariyal (coconut), grated 200 gms
- Chironji 150 gms
- Boora (powdered sugar) 350-400 gms
- Desi ghee (for frying)
Steps:
- Break the makhanas into small pieces.
- Roast them for about 10 mins on a slow flame.
- Heat enough ghee and fry almonds until they become light brown. Keep frying on low heat.
- Next, fry some makhanas till crisp. Keep aside.
- Fry goand till they become crisp, remove and keep aside.
- Fry chironji on low heat. Keep aside.
- Roast the grated coconut with 1-2 tablespoons of ghee for at least 10-15 minutes on low heat until you get a nutty aroma.
- After frying all the ingredients, take a large kadhai, add boora and little water to make a consistent chashni (sugary liquid).
- Add all the ingredients in the chashni.
- Add about two tablespoons of ghee into the mixture.
- Mix it well and Panjiri is ready to serve.
