Pune, June 23: Pandharpur Wari or Vari is an annual pilgrimage (yatra) of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj and Sant Tukaram Maharaj from temples in Pune's Alandi and Dehu respectively to Pandharpur in neighbouring district Solapur. Sant Tukaram Maharaj Palkhi Prasthan begins on the auspicious day of holy-Ashadhi Ekadashi, which falls on Monday, June 24 from Dehu and reaches Pandharpur on July 11. Pandharpur Wari 2019: Non-Veg Restaurants, Liquor Shops, Slaughterhouses Closed Along the Route Taken by Sant Tukaram and Sant Dnyaneshwar Palkhi in Pune.

A Palakhi carrying Paduka (footprints) of notable saints like Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram is carried out from their respective shrines, in which millions of devotees participate. Chants of "Dhyanba Mauli Tukaram" rang out during the great festival. After a brief rest on June 24, Monday, the warkaris embark their journey to Pandharpur on Tuesday. According to the history, the tradition of carrying paduka was started by, Tukaram's youngest son in 1685. In 1820, further changes were brought to the pilgrimage by Tukaram's descendants and devotees of Dnyneshwar called Haibatravbaba Arphalkar. Haibatravbaba is acknowledged for the wari in use today.
