The history of No Smoking Day dates to 1984, as the day originated in the Republic of Ireland that year on Ash Wednesday. As per records, the idea to establish the day was when the ruling clergy determined that it would be a great idea for people to give up smoking cigarettes for Lent, which goes on for 40 days. Since then, the day has been observed on the second Wednesday of March across the world. The campaign was run by a charity of the same name, based in London with four full-time staff until this was merged with the British Heart Foundation in 2011.
