Nirjala Ekadashi is a significant day observed every year by Hindus all over the world. This year, Nirjala Ekadashi 2024 will be observed on June 18. Ekadashi, the 11th day of the lunar cycle according to the Hindu lunar calendar, is a highly auspicious day dedicated to worshipping Lord Vishnu. There are 24 Ekadashi days every year, with two additional ones during a leap year. Nirjala Ekadashi is considered to be one of the toughest Ekadashi fasts. Observed on the Shukla Paksha of the Jyestha month in the Hindu calendar, it typically falls between May and June in the Gregorian calendar, depending on the moon's position. Also known as Bhimsen Ekadashi or Nirjala Gyaras, the word 'Nirjala' literally translates to 'without water.' It means that those who are fasting must fast without consuming any food or water for the entire day. This makes it one of the most challenging Ekadashi fasts to observe. Nirajala Ekadashi History
Nirjala Ekadashi, also known as Bhimaseni Nirjala Ekadashi, Bhimaseni Ekadashi, Bhimsen Ekadashi or Pandava Nirjala Ekadashi, is considered to be the most significant among the 24 Ekadashis. Even if devotees are unable to observe the other 23 Ekadashis, they can get the benefits of all 23 Ekadashis by observing just the Nirjala Ekadashi. The story of Nirjala Ekadashi comes from the Mahabharata. Bhima, one of the Pandavas, wanted to observe all the Ekadashi fasts. However, due to his hunger and appetite, he struggled to fast. He took the advice of Sage Vyasa, who asked him to observe just one difficult fast—Nirjala Ekadashi—to get the virtues of all the 24 Ekadashis.
Bhima followed Vyasa's advice and did the Nirjala Ekadashi fast, abstaining from both food and water. Bhima became unconscious by the end of the fast but he was revived the next morning, with water from the river Ganga, which was offered with holy Tulsi leaves. By completing this challenging fast, he received the blessings of all 24 Ekadashis. This is why Nirjala Ekadashi is also called Bhimaseni Ekadashi.
