Today is National Tequila Day in the United States! Americans celebrate July 24 with the Mexican drink every year. While beer lovers are plenty in the world, tequila takes some time to get into people's good books. But those who love it vouch for it! The making of tequila is quite a long process like many other alcoholics drinks and tequila lovers it's worth it all.

Garnished with salt and lemon, the drink is quite popular among its lovers. Also, it is said that to enjoy your drink completely, one must smell it first, like wine. The Mexican Academy of Tequila Tasters has identified more than 600 aromas in tequila. Officially there are five classifications of tequila. They are Blanco, Joven, Reposado, Añejo, and Extra Añejo, from youngest to oldest.

What is tequila made from?

There is a popular belief that tequila is made from cactus, however, it isn't. Neither is it made of fruit or any grain, it comes from a desert succulent called the blue weber agave plant. The plant is generally seen in high altitudes and requires less water to survive. This plant serves as the base ingredient for tequila. And Mexico's agave landscape is recognised as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

How long does tequila take to be made?

On an average, it takes five to eight years to make a bottle of tequila. The longer time period is due to the time taken in production. Blue Weber agave plant which is used to make the drink has to be grown in best conditions. A good quality plant will need to grow fully to give the best results.

Where is tequila produced?

Tequila is originally from Mexico and according to their law, it can only be produced in the state of Jalisco and other limited areas including Guanajuato and Michoacan.

Although the common practice is to take it as a shot, in Mexico people prefer to sip their drink. While the beverage is known typically for bag hangovers, there is a specific type of tequila which won't make you feel hungover. Blanco tequila is made with 100 per cent pure agave which save you from hangovers. Most other drinks contain a mix of different sugars and corn syrup that results in hangovers.
