So National Donut Day 2019 falls on June 7 this year. It is essentially celebrated to honour the Salvation Army Lassies, the women that served doughnuts to soldiers during WWI. The celebrations of National Doughnut Day or Donut Day began in the year 1938. It started as a fundraiser for Chicago's The Great Salvation Army. Their main goal was to help those in need during the Great Depression. And it also honours The Salvation Army "Lassies" of World War I, who served doughnuts to soldiers. About 250 Salvation Army volunteers went to France after the WWI. The freshly baked goods could not be provided to the volunteers.  the two Salvation Army volunteers (Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance) came up with the idea of providing doughnuts.
