National Doctors' Day is observed on July 1 every year in India. It aims to recognise the contributions of medics in the lives of individuals and communities. The day showcases the efforts taken by doctors towards society for maintaining a healthy generation. In India, National Doctors' Day is observed in the memory of the legendary physician and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy who was born on July 1, 1882. National Doctors' Day is celebrated by health care organisations, wherein doctors and nurses are honoured for their work. Dr Roy was honoured with the country's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna on February 4, 1961. India observes Doctors' Day on July 1 to pay tribute to doctors who strive constantly to saves lives and to highlight the value of doctors in people's lives. The National Doctors' Day was established by the Central Government in 1991 to be recognised and observed every year on July 1 to pay honour Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy.

Along with being a physician, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy was also a renowned freedom fighter. He is also considered the great architect of West Bengal and a member of Brahmo Samaj.  He was the alumnus of the University of Calcutta and in his memory, the Union Government had also instituted an award. He is known for playing an instrumental role in the establishment of Indian Medical Association (IMA) and also in the establishment of the Medical Council of India (MCI) in 1928.
