Legal Definition

To be legally classified as bourbon, the whiskey must be made in the United States, contain at least 51% corn, and be aged in new, charred oak barrels.

Aging Requirements

By law, bourbon must be aged in new charred oak barrels. There is no minimum aging requirement for “straight bourbon,” but it must be aged for at least two years.

No Additives

Authentic bourbon cannot contain any additives or colourings. The rich flavours and caramel colour come solely from the interaction with the charred oak barrels during the aging process.
