The festival's name, 'Narali Purani', is derived from the word 'Nariyal', which means coconut, and 'Purnima', which means 'full moon day'. On this day, offerings such as rice, flowers, and coconuts are offered to Lord Varuna, the god of ocean and waters. As per religious beliefs, it is said that the Puja offered to Lord Varuna on this day appeases him, and he protects people of the fishing communities from all sorts of untoward incidents. The Brahmins in Maharashtra perform a ritualistic Shravani Upakarma on this day and observe Phalahar fasting on the day. They eat only Nariyal, i.e., the coconut, during the fast. Hence, in Konkan and coastal Maharashtra, the day is known as Nariyal Purnima.
