Narali Purnima is majorly observed by Hindus in Daman and Diu, on the west coast of India and in the coastal regions of Maharashtra like Thane, Ratnagiri, Konkan, etc. The word Naral means coconut which is offered to the sea on the full moon day and that is why it is known as Narali Purnima. It is also celebrated as Shravani Purnima, Raksha Bandhan and Rakhi Purnima.

It falls on the full moon on Shravan month in the Hindu calendar. According to Drik Panchang, Narali Purnima this year will be celebrated on August 26. Narali Purnima 2018 Significance:

The coconut festival marks the end of the monsoon season in Maharashtra. On this occasion, people offer coconuts to the sea. It marks the beginning of the fishing and the water-trade amongst the fisherfolk. The period before the full moon day is regarded as the mating season for the fish. Hence, during this period, the fishermen withhold their fishing activity so as not to disturb the process of reproduction by killing the fish. The people in the community consume no fish during this time. Narali Purnima 2018 Celebration:

A few days before the festival, the fishermen repair their old fishing nets, paint their old boats or fix any holes that are leaking in their boats and ships. To decorate the boats, the community also uses colourful streamers or flower garlands to give it a festive touch. Individuals worship the Sea, god Varuna asking its blessings for a prosperous fishing season ahead.
