The police have placed restrictions on traffic in certain areas from 1 pm to 7 pm on Friday. The police have asked commuters to avoid the JJ Flyover during these hours and have suggested alternative routes for them to avoid getting stuck in traffic. "In view of Muharram procession in areas of Pydhonie & Byculla, traffic on JJ flyover may be affected primarily bw 1 pm to 7pm today. People R advised to avoid commuting on JJ Flyover & use alternate routes from the suburbs to City & vice versa via Eastern Freeway/ Pedder Road (sic)," the Mumbai Police tweeted. A procession of Ashura i.e. ‘Sham-e-Gariba’ for Muharram is scheduled from 2 PM on Friday on certain routes. It will start from Zainabia Hall- Pakmodia Street along Yakub Street, I R Road, Sir J J Junction, Sir J J Road, Nesbit Junction, Balwantsingh Dhodi bridge and terminates at Rehamatabad Cemetry at Mazgaon in Byculla.
In Maharashtra, there was a lot of confusion, over a public holiday for Muharram. Reports inform that the state government will continue with its pre-announced holiday on Thursday but have allowed Muslim employees to take a day off (Casual leave or earned leave) to observe a day of mourning on Friday.
