In the capital Toronto, sunrise will take place on October 17 at 7:33 am. Noting the sunrise timing is essential as from this point onwards, the women are barred from consuming any type of food item or even drinking a drop of water. The fast will end at 8:55 pm, when the moonrise will take place in the city.
In Ottawa, the sunrise will take place at 7:20 am, whereas, the moonrise is at 8:35 pm. In Calgary - which also houses a significant number of Indian migrants - the sunrise will happen at 8:01 am, whereas, the moonrise will take place at 8:52 pm.
As per the ritual, the women fasting for Karva Chauth will eat sargi or the traditional food before sunrise and break their fasts with water and a meal after the sighting of the moon. Before breaking their fast, they worship the Chandrama and pray for the long lives of their husbands.
