The festival spans three days, with the main day being the third day of Bhadrapada. On the day of Hartalika Teej, women wake up early in the morning and take a ceremonial bath. This bath is considered a purifying ritual and an essential part of preparing for the day's festivities.  The fast observed by women on Hartalika Teej is known as "nirjala vrat," meaning a fast without food or water. Women undertake this rigorous fast to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati for the long life and well-being of their husbands. Many women also observe a partial fast, consuming fruits and milk.

The fast is traditionally broken after performing the evening prayers and offering special food items to the deities. Women offer traditional sweets, fruits, and other delicacies to the gods before consuming them as prasad (blessed food). Women exchange gifts and tokens of love with their female friends and relatives. This exchange of gifts strengthens bonds among women and signifies their love and solidarity. Wishing everyone a Happy Hartalika Teej 2023!
