It is also a day to remember the horrifying Jallianwala Bagh massacre that took place on April 1, 1919. A large but peaceful crowd had gathered at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, Punjab, on April 13 to protest against the Rowlatt Act and for the arrest of pro-Independence activists. General Dyer was asked to open fire on the crowd that had gathered there, which resulted in the massacre. Hundreds of civilians lost their lives and families in the brutal event. Shaheed Udham Singh, who was also a part of the massacre, narrowly escaped death. He then made it his mission to retaliate against those who were responsible for the event. He eventually killed Michael O’Dwyer, who was a governor of the Punjab Province of British India. Shaheed Udham Singh was immediately arrested and later hanged on July 31, 1940.
