History and Significance of Mandela Day

The celebrations of Mandela Day was officially declared by the United Nations in November 2009 and the first celebrations were followed in the year 2010. But in the year 2009 itself, the Nelson Mandela Foundation invited the global community to join in support of these celebrations. It is not a public holiday, but a day to honour the legacy of the great leader that Mandela was. He addressed racial issues and supported the reconciliation of the oppressed.

Nelson Mandela played an instrumental role in the anti-apartheid movement. He served as the  President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. A great humanitarian he dedicated his life to community service and volunteering. Mandela Day also encourages similar action from the people to do something towards bringing a positive change in the world.
