The first day of the month of May marks Maharashtra Day. The Maharastra Diwas is a day to commemorate the formation of the state in the year 1960. On May 1, 1960, the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat were formed according to the Bombay Reorganisation Act. The day thus marks celebration among all the Maharashtrians, as a day to be proud of the statehood. There are certain festivities arranged in tune with cultural celebrations. The day is essentially a public holiday to all the institutions and companies under the State government.
