Maharashtra Day 2018 Date: History, Significance And Celebrations Related to Maharashtra Diwas

Maharashtra Day is celebrated on May 1 to commemorate the formation of the state. It was divided from the Bombay State on May 1, 1960, and formed on the basis of different languages spoken. The original state was divided into Maharashtra and Gujarat depending on people who spoke Marathi, Konkani, Gujarati and Kutchi. Various cultural events are held across the state showing its rich heritage.

The Sanyukta Maharashtra Samiti led the movement at the forefront to divide Bombay State into two states. The states of Maharashtra and Gujarat were thus formed according to the Bombay Reorganisation Act, 1960 which was enacted by the Parliament of India on April 25, 1960.

Maharashtra Day 2018 or Maharashtra Diwas is a public holiday in the state and it applies to all the schools, offices and companies under the jurisdiction of the State and central Government. The sale of alcohol is prohibited on this day in the state, excluding foreigners.

On this day, the Governor of Maharashtra presides over a parade and addresses a large gathering at Shivaji Park in Dadar. Various state government and private sector projects are inaugurated on this day. Several annual celebrations of state's institutions are also held on the same day.

The BMC force, home guards, Mumbai Police and civil defence members participate in the parade. Flag hoisting is held at the district headquarters early in the morning as they pay tribute to martyrs. People with notable contributions to their respective fields are rewarded on this day. Private housing societies also celebrate the day with cultural events. People dress in Maharashtrian attire and perform folk songs, lavani and lezim.

Maharashtra has a long history and can be traced back all the way to the 4th century. They have been a part of major dynasties in the Indian subcontinent, including the Mauryas, Chalukyas and Satavahanas. Maharashtra Day coincides with International Worker's Day or Labour Day which is being observed since the 19th century.
