Mumbai, September 10: Thousands of people offer prayers to Lord Ganesha at Lalbaugcha Raja, which is considered one of the most prominent Ganpati pandals in Mumbai. For this year's Ganesh Chaturthi festival, a huge idol of Lord Ganesha is crafted in a traditional manner and has been installed in a beautiful pandal at Lalbaugcha Raja. This year, the pandal at Lalbaugcha Raja is decorated on the theme of ambitious Chandrayaan 2 spacecraft which was launched in July by Indian Space Research Organisation or ISRO. Every year, hordes of devotees throng the Lalbaugcha Raja pandal during the ten-day-long festivities to pay obeisance to Lord Ganesha. The idol of Lord Ganesha is kept for public display for 11 days; thereafter it is immersed in the Arabian sea at Girgaum Chowpatty on the auspicious day of Anant Chaturdashi. This year, Ganeshotsav began on September 2 and the festivities will culminate on September 12 with the immersion of idols in water. Bachchans, Ambanis Offer Prayers at Lalbaugcha Raja.

The Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal was founded in 1934 because of a vow for construction of the Lalbaug Market. After marketplace at Peru Chawl was shut down in 1932, fishermen and vendors who used to sit in the open place vowed to Lord Ganesha for a permanent place for their market. A local landlord Rajabai Tayyab Ali agreed to give a plot for construction of a market. As their wish was fulfilled, fishermen and traders established the Ganesh idol on 12 September 1934. The idol is designed by the Kambli family for over eight decades.
