After marketplace at Peru Chawl was shut down in 1932, fishermen and vendors who used to sit in the open place prayed to Lord Ganesha for a permanent place for their market. A local landlord Rajabai Tayyab Ali agreed to give a plot for construction of a market. As their wish was fulfilled, fishermen and traders established the Ganesh idol on 12 September 1934 and placed it at Lalbaugcha Raja pandal, previously known as Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal. The idol is designed by the Kambli family for over eight decades.
